As someone who views the world as a kaleidoscope of fascinating people and places, my life has been deeply enriched by myriad forms of cross-cultural connections. From being privileged to have the opportunity to travel across five continents to immersing myself in diverse cultural experiences through music, books, movies, and food, these encounters have profoundly shaped the person I am today.

Cultural Explorer & Creative Storyteller🌈

Like a kaleidoscope, each new experience and discovery revealed unexpected similarities and connections. The name “Kaleidoscopic Footprints” represents these ever shifting reflections finding beauty in unexpected connections I discover as I move through the world. Each step forward reveals new perspectives while leaving traces of where I’ve been – whether that’s making a music video combining Bollywood actresses, Korean band members, and Spanish songs, or teaching myself Bahasa Indonesian at age 17.

About Kaleidoscopic Footprints👣

My journey in creating cross-cultural content began years ago with an experimental music video that combined Indian cinema, K-pop, and Latin music. While listening to Selena Gomez’s Spanish tracks, I envisioned Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji and South Korean musician Jung Yong-hwa (CN Blue) creating something entirely new together. It started as a simple iPod shuffle moment but became a perfect example of finding unexpected cultural harmonies. The final video titled “I’m Mr. Fantastic and You’re Wonder Woman” didn’t match the exact vision in my mind, but it captures the essence of cross-cultural creative exploration.💖

My mindset & attitude while creating this video from different aspects of cultures that I loved was: Maybe someone will like some part of it enough, go searching, and fall in love with something so very different that is unlike themselves.

Writing as a Lifelong Companion🖊️

Writing has been my constant companion since I was 14, starting with personal journals filled with stories and poems. Though I’ve been crafting words for years, I kept them private until recently. In April 2023, something unexpected happened: I received my first public recognition for a personal essay I’d written over a decade ago in a Creative Writing Contest hosted by my local library.

The overwhelmingly positive response from loved ones, who discovered unknown facets of my life through my writing, showed me the power of sharing these kaleidoscopic experiences. Their reactions gave me the courage to finally share my work with the world.

Cultural Exploration Journey 🌐

Before I was able to physically and had the financial means to travel internationally, I sought out every opportunity to broaden my horizons by trying to learn more about the diverse cultures around me as much as possible and immersed myself in anything international/global related.

My cultural exploration journey was primarily through the following:

Music: fell in love with an Indonesian rockstar at age 17 and started learning the Bahasa Indonesian language.
Books: Mughal Empress Nur Jahan was the REAL architect and visionary behind the Taj Mahal!
Movies: Bangladeshi movies + Bollywood, Korean dramas, Malayalam cinema
Food: Kari Sach Moan, Yukgaejang, dosa, phở tai bo vien, alfajor, kalio rendang, tom kha gai, San Bei Ji

Random FACTS That Actually Matter 🦋

• Learning about the diverse minority and indigenous communities living in whichever country I’m traveling to or in.

• Reading obituaries as it reminds me of how I would want to be remembered and the acknowledgments section of books to see how writers express their gratitude for the different people in their lives. Some are so funny, memorable, sweet, and thoughtful.

• Holiday I’m obsessed with: Dia de los Muertos! The colors, creativity, and the spirit of it all. (yes, I’m a huge fan of the film “Coco” because I felt like it conveyed this holiday really well for a mass audience).

• Bucket list item: attend a masquerade ball (a proper one!) as I have a fascination with masks. I think people wear them often even if they aren’t as brightly decorated as the products that are sold in stores or at museums.

• Embarking on multitudes spontaneous deep dives into topics that spark my curiosity.
  

📎Things I Actually Care About

• People who know how to communicate after conflict. Not perfectly, just honestly, with some follow through.

• Emotional responsibility & Emotional Labor. Especially when things get hard. Even if it’s awkward. Even if they’re still learning. Especially when it’s not modeled.

• Context. Always. In stories, in religion, in history, in conversations. 

• Syncretic traditions. Bonbibi makes more sense to me than Durga or Allah in a tiger-infested forest, and I’ll explain why at length in an upcoming essay.

• Clarity with tone. Not just what you say, but how you say it. I don’t need your big words. I need your real ones.

• Design that respects people’s time. Don’t make me fight the interface.

• Longform writing that trusts the reader’s intelligence.

• Stories that allow women to be angry, grieving, protective, loving and not punished for it.

• People who keep their word, or name it when they can’t.

• Depth that doesn’t try to sound deep.

• History that includes the people no one funded.

• Sincerity. Especially the quiet kind.

• Being able to ask, “What do you need right now?” and mean it.
