Khmai Restaurant Chicago Review – Cambodian Fine Dining with Heart

Khmai Restaurant Chicago – First Impressions & Expectations 🇰🇭

I love trying new cuisines, and Cambodian food was next on my list. I was curious about the Khmai Cambodian fine dining in Chicago’s backstory but slightly skeptical about the “fine dining” part and “reservations only” setup, as I’ve been underwhelmed before at other fine dining places before small portions, dim lights, overpriced menus. Still, Khmai was the closest Cambodian restaurant in Rogers Park that fit my itinerary.

I arrived on a weekday at 7:45pm after having to push back my original reservation time and the restaurant was packed! Therefore, I expected slow service and was fine with it as everything else was great. I didn’t feel overwhelmed as the tables and people were nicely spaced out with plenty of room to freely move around.

If you’re looking for somewhere quiet to walk before your meal, consider heading toward Ping Tom Memorial Park in Chinatown, it’s not far by rideshare and offers a peaceful riverside view. Just make sure you have the correct entrance address, as Google Maps can be confusing!

💛 Khmai Ambiance & Decor: Black, Gold, and Khmer Comfort🖤

  • Decor: I adored the elegant black and gold theme, complete with live bamboo on each table.
  • Ambiance: Classy yet approachable with a business casual without being uppity
  • Lighting: clear and soft without harsh brightness
  • Seating: Spacious layout with comfortable distance between tables. I was seated along the wall where there was an outlet to charge my phone which was very helpful as I had been running around the city all day & my batter was running low.

🏆Cambodian Chefs in Chicago: Culinary Awards & Recognition

Khmai was founded by Chef Mona Sang and her mother, Sarom Sieng—both survivors of the Cambodian genocide. Their journey from Cambodia to Chicago is reflected not just in the food, but in the care and presence they bring to every aspect of the dining experience.

🥇 In 2022, the mother-daughter duo was named co-winners of Eater Chicago’s Chefs of the Year.
🥈 In 2023, Khmai was a semifinalist for the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant.

🥘What to Eat at Khmai – Cambodian Menu Review of My Order

🍹Drink (Alcoholic) – the Spiced Mango Daiquiri was fantastic, topped with a freshly sliced mango. Perfect refreshing drink after a long & hot day of sightseeing.

🍢Appetizer – Sach Ko Ja Kak – lemongrass beef skewers accompanied by a small bowl of rice that tasted amazing and totally filled me up before my entrée arrived.

🥘Entree – Kari Sach Moan – Khmer chicken red curry which reminded me of a mild Thai red curry but that’s on me for not ordering something completely different. The potatoes and carrots were perfectly tender. This was a huge win for me as I can’t usually eat vegetables when dining out as most places serve either completely raw or barely cooked vegetables.

🍽️Khmai Menu Review: Portion Sizes & Clarity

  • The menu was simple & easy to understand. There was no dizzying array of options leaving you confused, which I count as a plus.
  • Huge portions for the price and I didn’t feel ripped off in any way.

Khmai is also featured in my guide to the top international restaurants in Chicago—where I pair each spot with a drink reccommendation and neighborhood tips.

🤝🏾 Customer Service at Khmai – Above & Beyond

Nicole, my bilingual server, was the epitome of and MY definition of outstanding customer service: attentive, friendly, and not overbearing in your face.

Nicole asked thoughtful questions regarding my preferences before making personalized menu recommendations.

When I asked Nicole if she had tried all the menu items, she said she had in fact tried everything on the menu except certain special dishes since the menu changes each month. I was impressed as  I can’t’ remember the last time I visited a place where the staff had been this well trained.

Nicole consistently checked up on me throughout the night and offered a water refill without ice per my preference which I only said once when I first arrived while I was waiting on my rideshare. Nicole packed up my leftovers instead of simply handing me a to-go box and leaving abruptly.

Before I left, Nicole informed me about an upcoming special event consisting of a reservation only prix fixe menu with live entertainment and photography exhibition and storytelling regarding chef Mona and her family’s experiences surviving Khmer Rouge regime’s genocide and arriving as refugees to the USA.

🥢Cultural Consideration: Chopsticks & Utensils for All

Each table came with both chopsticks and utensils which made a real difference.
Many diners feel hesitant and uncomfortable asking for forks or spoons at Southeast & East Asian restaurants if they aren’t comfortable using chopsticks for their entire meal or their chopsticks skills aren’t up to eating a full meal with them.

This thoughtful inclusion ensured everyone felt comfortable whether they used one or both—no shame or awkwardness.

🚻 Clean Women’s Restroom & Thoughtful Touches

🧻 The women’s restroom was clean and stocked with soft toilet paper that didn’t rip upon touch.
🧴I appreciated the nice smelling aromatherapy lotions which helped with my dry chapped hands and the ambience provided by the flickering electric candle.

💳 Payment, Tipping, & Transparency

This was the first restaurant that I dined in Chicago with a starting tip suggestion at 15%—a welcome break from the usual 18–20% that I encountered elsewhere in the city. It felt respectful and unforced. I didn’t feel like I was being treated like a cash cow.

🛜 Website Experience & Reservation Process

The website made reservations easy by integrating Open Table on the home page which is one step less to think about and do in the customer experience journey. Reservations at Khmai can be made directly through OpenTable—no account required.

I made my reservations late at night and received a text message and voicemail (because I wasn’t able to pick up and not because it was a recording system) to confirm it the next day from a real person.

When I had to push my reservation time twice due to some unexpected circumstances, each call was answered politely and professionally, and updated confirmations followed.

Bravo to whomever is managing Marketing, Customer Service Experience, & Website Design.

💬  Final Thoughts on Khmai Cambodian Fine Dining

Khmai Cambodian restaurant delivered a top-notch start-to-finish dining experience that combined delicious food, excellent customer centered service, and a welcoming atmosphere.

I feel privileged to spend my hard-earned money supporting a mother-daughter duo, refugee and women-owned business who are introducing and educating others through the food they grew up cooking and eating.

Thank you so much to chef Mona and her fabulous team for such a memorable experience. I hope to return on my next Chicago visit and also check out Kaun Khmai.

📌 Kaun Khmai – Casual Cambodian Brunch & Street Food

Kaun Khmai (means “child of Khmai” in Khmer) is the casual sister restaurant to Khmai in Chicago. Located near Loyola University, Kaun Khmai Chicago serves Cambodian street food, brunch, and cocktails in a relaxed setting. Like Khmai, it’s a refugee- and women-owned business deeply rooted in cultural heritage.
