Who is Begum Rokeya? Bengali Muslim Writer & Educator

Welcome to your guide to the works of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain (1880-1932), a pioneering Bengali Muslim writer, educationist, and social reformer known for Sultana’s Dream – the first feminist science fiction in Bengal (modern day West Bengal, India and Bangladesh). Despite never receiving formal education, Rokeya wrote and published work in Bengali, English, & Urdu across three decades (1903-1932) and started a school called Sakhawat Memorial Govt. Girls’ High School that stands today in Kolkatta, India. Rokeya addressed pressing social issues through various genres, from satire to social commentary.

Her writing focused on education, social reform, and the advancement of Bengali Muslim society, particularly women’s rights using religious metaphors and humor skillfully.

Her literary journey began with “Pipasa” (Thirst) in 1901, published in the Bengali magazine Nabaprabha, and continued until her final work “Narir Adhikar” (The Rights of Women), found incomplete on her desk at her death.

While her work remain highly relevant today, they remain largely inaccessible outside academic circles. This resource brings together English translations, international editions, and essential resources to make Rokeya’s powerful literary legacy accessible to modern readers.

About Me: Discovering Begum Rokeya’s Works

My whole life, I knew only the basics: Rokeya was a Bengali Muslim women’s education & rights activist and writer. Also, that Rokeya Hall is named after her at Dhaka University campus in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Everything changed when I finally read English translations of Begum Rokeya’s work in 2023. Ever since then, I have been in awe. Her work resonates with me on every level.

Why I Created A Begum Rokeya Works Resource

My journey reading Rokeya’s work ignited a passion to share her legacy more widely. As I was very much conflicted on whether I should first build an ofrenda, organize a museum exhibition about her, compose a sonnet, or the multitude of other creative ideas brewing in my mind, I decided to start with this comprehensive resource page.
